Photography Assignment #5

The style of photography I am interested in is Architecture photography. A person of interest in this field of photography is Eddy Joaquim, as his architecture photography is extraordinary. The benefits of this type of photography are: it allows you to look at architecture as a work of art, and you can take your time with this type of photography. I would become/train for this profession you will probably need training in the basics of photo taking and using special light. So going to a photo school would help. To go to shoot this style of photography going to any photography school, or an arts school with a photography program (ex. Langara’s photography program). You can pay for it by being hired to take photos of: properties being sold, commercial shots, documenting projects (ex. documenting the progress of a building being made), selling design concepts, capturing images for company websites. A disadvantage is that there are many architectural photographers and that will make it difficult to be noticed in a big industry. Special equipment required to take these photos are: a wide angle lens, tripod, a wireless camera trigger, and possibly the use of flash or strobe lights.

Aaron Siskind Assignment

My photos were taken in colour; however, they were edited to be monochromatic through the use of Lightroom. I attempted to replicate Aaron Siskind’s use of contrasting light and dark, as well as, his use of accentuating lines, curves, and shapes. Although the eventual outcome of my photos barely resembled the works of Aaron Siskind, I found that accentuating the contrast as well as the shapes formed by the objects photographed could make something so simple seem so ornate.

Critique

The photos Aaron Siskind prdouces are quite abstract, but also very simple at the same time. His monochromatic photography seemed to focus quite greatly on the texture as well as the lines, curves, and contrast between light and dark. In almost all of his work, these features are always noted. What I enjoyed about the photos shown above is the strong contrast between light and dark. The enjoyed how the distinct difference between the shadows and highlights of the object made the image pop, even without the use of colours. I also enjoyed the very distinct lines, curves, and shapes as well. It was also fascinating to see how he made the simplest of objects (eg. the rocks and wood) seem so extravagant.

Describe

The image takes place in the downtown of a city. There are buildings behind a group of men.  A man wearing a suit and cap stands in front of a group of other well-dressed men. All the men from left to right seem to be of different races. Two Asian men are positioned on the right, in the centre two men of colour stand, and in the far left corner, a Caucasian man stands. The two men at the centre look to their right, while the two on the right seem to stare directly into the camera.

Analyze

The camera seems to be positioned slightly lower than the men, making the subject appear taller. The buildings behind the men seem to frame them. The darker building on the right shows a stark contrast between itself and the lighter coloured clothing of the men standing before it. While the clothing of the man on the left blend in with the lighter building. As noticed, there are sharp, dark lines (the wires) behind the men. The wires align with the men. It begins with the most forward point of the photo, which is the man with the cap, and descends along with the height of the men. The men also stand in “layers”; beginning with the man in the cap in front, the man in the dark suit behind him, and the other two men behind him. This layering adds to the focus being more on the man at the very front.

Reflect

Everyone in the photo seems to simply be going along with their life, living their days as regular, everyday people. It leaves us with a sense of regularity. There is also a sense of togetherness. This is due to the fact that the men, all of different races, are walking together through the city streets. However, there is still a sensation of separation. As mentioned before, the men stand in “layers”. Thus giving the impression that although the men walk together, there is still a separation between the different races.
